How to make more money by licensing
your Intellectual Property than you make
with your core business

While most business owners focus exclusively on their core business, a number of savvy businesses are cashing in with licensing. In fact, in many cases, they're making more money by licensing out their Intellectual Property than they make through their core business.

Let me fill in the blanks so you clearly understand how this is done.

If you're like most business owners and entrepreneurs, you have products and services along with systems and technology you've developed for running your business more effectively. You also have life experience, hobbies and topics you're passionate about that you've spent time to master. And all of these are assets that could have significant value to other businesses.

You see, every product and service with a proven track record, every system and technology that make running a business easier or more profitable, and the wisdom you've accumulated through your work experience and life experience are all forms of Intellectual Property that can be licensed to other businesses.

All it takes is understanding a simple process for packaging and marketing your Intellectual Property. And once you've gained this understanding, you can often make more money from licensing your assets than you make with your core business.

Here's a real life example that demonstrates exactly how this is done…

Case Study: Using licensing to create a 6-figure stream
of passive income in just three months

Creating a 6 or 7-figure stream of passive income can be done much more quickly than you might think. Here's a recent example that illustrates how I did this with some of my own intellectual property, generating a 6-figure stream of passive income over a period of just three months.

Starting in the middle of October I sent out the first email introducing a new, master level program for consultants that lets them license my best performing marketing campaigns and my complete prospecting and sales system. This included many campaigns and all the key marketing pieces that I use in my own business and had not shared in any of my other programs.

So let's get to the bottom line. In just 3 months, I was able to:

• Create a new division of my business from scratch and have it be extremely profitable within the first week of launching it
• Fully prove the model within this 3-month window
• Attract a major licensee to take over the entire operation
• Get a hefty six-figure down payment, plus an ongoing double-digit royalty. Depending on overall sales, this will be worth between $300k and $600k per year to me, even though I do very little other than collect my monthly royalties.
• Built into the process a plan to sell off this division three years from now. Based on maintaining the level of sales I just showed you, the acquisition price should be between $3 million to $10 million.

The single most important part of this process

Now, the amount of income I've already derived from this in just a short time is great. But the most important point I want you to understand is that what I did here — and anyone can easily do by applying my system — was to take existing Intellectual Property and turn it into a lucrative new profit center.

This was achieved by attractively packaging my Intellectual Property (in this case, proven marketing campaigns)… licensing that IP out to individual consultants and copywriters… and then creating a master license that was sold to a single company to manage the licenses I sold and add more just like them to the portfolio.

So in this particular case, there were actually two forms of licensing involved. And at both levels, it requires just minimal time and effort to support your licensees. So nearly all of the income you make is passive income, requiring very little attention from you beyond negotiating the initial license.

A few more examples — and what this all means for you

What I was able to accomplish in just three months is only one of many examples of using licensing to turn your existing assets into large, ongoing streams of passive profits. And the fact is that licensing can be used to profit from a wide variety of products, services, business systems, technology, business wisdom and other forms of intellectual property.

I've had the good fortune of generating many other successes with licensing as well. But just in case you aren't familiar with my track record, here's a quick recap.

• A couple years before Corey Rudl passed away, I sold a division of one of my companies to him. This was a straight sale, but the one "extra" that Corey insisted on was that I throw in a couple consulting hours to give him and his partner, Derek Gehl, an immersion training in the basics of asset licensing. Mind you, this was done in about two hours and it really only scratched the surface of what's available through licensing.

  Even so, the results were exceptional. Derek has told me that within the first month, by implementing what I taught them, they took in an additional $1 million. And altogether, they ended up producing $2.6 million in additional revenue they never would have seen without the introduction I gave them to licensing.

• You may have heard of the toy I developed and then licensed to a major toy company. It was actually an attachment that went on an existing skateboard toy that featured the graphics and logo of Tony Hawk and five other major skateboard brands. It sold all over the world and was featured in Toys-R-Us, Wal-Mart, Kaybee Toys, Target and in major drug store chains and gift shops.

  Not only did I make a handsome royalty on every piece sold (close to $4 million dollars in gross sales), but I was also featured on the front page of the business section of San Diego's daily newspaper and because of being associated with a major toy featuring Tony Hawk, I was sought out to consult on a number of toy and product development projects.

• Next up, despite barely making it out of high school (the jazz and blues clubs in Detroit were just too enticing in my senior year), I was invited to be a principle in commercializing a brilliant technology for the online training industry. I immediately saw the licensing potential and recommended to the partners that we develop the technology as licensable to Fortune 500 corporations.

  As with all technology launches, even though this was a highly effective technology with an impressive track record, it was a rocky road at first. But through the use of solid licensing strategies we built a very successful business model and the company was acquired for multi-millions in just 17 months.

  The company that acquired us is still going strong nine years later with clients like Cars.com, Johnson & Johnson, Pioneer, General Electric, CVS Pharmacies and more. (Hey, who says you need high school anyway? Especially when Buddy Guy is playing the 2:00 am set at an after hours club.)

• The accumulated knowledge of licensing marketing services, information products, toys and software led to my next project — packaging my Intellectual Property on marketing into training programs to license to other businesses. You see, once we sold the software business, I returned to marketing consulting. And to tell you the truth, I found consulting pretty boring compared to what I had been doing with licensing.

  Then, one morning in the shower I got the idea to take my most successful marketing assets — marketing campaigns, marketing strategies, and marketing systems (sounds familiar, right) - and create training programs around them for other businesses. The beauty of this process is that most of the training materials already exist. You're already using them as guidelines for yourself — and possibly in a more structured form in order to train your employees.

  The tremendous advantage of getting proven marketing campaigns, marketing strategies, and marketing systems rather than developing something that could easily fall flat on its face appealed to dozens of consultants and small businesses and I quickly sold out all the licenses I had made available.   The great takeaway here is that by using a simple Asset Identification Survey I had developed, I was able to identify dozens of assets, many of which were not obvious without this Survey — that could be packaged and offered as training programs. And I can assure you that this Survey will do the same for any business or entrepreneur.

When you're licensing assets, the criteria for who you license them to has a few significant differences from the prospects or customers you're currently marketing to (although some of those will be candidates as well). So it only makes sense that you need different lead and traffic generation methods for this purpose.

In this Step, I'll show you exactly how to attract the ideal prospects and share every resource I personally use for achieving this. As much as you may know about lead and traffic generation, I can promise that you've never seen the method I've developed specifically for finding the right prospects to license your Intellectual Property to.

Plus, not only will this method deliver the prospects you need for licensing your assets to, but it will also build your list for selling your other products or services at the same time. So this Step alone should easily be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to your business.

Step 3: License rights to your Intellectual Property to other businesses. In this Step, I'll show you the most effective strategy and mechanics for licensing out your Intellectual Property. The critical factor, as I mentioned above, is to carefully screen and accept only those people who meet all the necessary criteria.

Step 4: Sell a master license to one person/company. Once you've licensed your Intellectual Property to a number of people and they're producing excellent results, the next step is to find a single person or company to sell a master license to.

Step 5: Liquidity event — usually the sale of the company. My goal right from the start is to plan exactly how each licensing project will end. And almost always, the ending I'm looking for is the purchase of the company. When this occurs, you could easily walk away with millions.

As with all the steps, there are important nuances that make the difference between an ordinary pay out and a truly stellar payout. This includes how you find the buyer (there are multiple ways to do this and not all are equal)… who negotiates the deal… how your payout is structured… and whether or not you have any responsibilities after the sale has closed.

Step 6: Exponential profits (or wash, rinse and repeat). The final step in the Blueprint is to create a systematic approach to repeating this with as many products, services, business processes, technologies and the wisdom you've gained as possible.
